Protecting Girls' Sports in Minnesota

Renee Carlson testifies in committee on HF12, to protect girls’ sports in K-12.

Overview

True North Legal is leading a coordinated public policy and legal effort to protect girls’ and women’s sports in Minnesota after the MSHSL passed a policy allowing males to participate in female sports. Sex-based distinctions in sports and private spaces are critical for women and girls’ to thrive and are legally consistent with federal protections established nearly 50 years ago under Title IX, and Minnesota law. We are defending this principle in state and federal court and the Minnesota legislature.

Our work to protect girls’ sports includes providing legal expertise to bill authors and state legislators, legislative testimony, and critical medical and sports experts in legislative hearings on bills seeking to align state policy with Title IX’s promise of fairness and equal opportunity for girls, such as in the Preserve Girls Sports Act and the exemptions intended to protect women and girls’ athletics in the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

TNL is also serving as co-counsel in FAU v. Ellison, et. al., alongside our allies at Alliance Defending Freedom. We filed a lawsuit in federal court in the District of Minnesotaon behalf of Minnesota female athletes who have been impacted by male participation in female only sports teams. Our nationwide efforts also include multiple amicus briefs filed in the U.S. Supreme Court at various stages in the landmark case Hecox v. Little and BPJ v. West Virgina, representing Idaho’s Representative Barbara Ehardt, Idaho’s chief author of Idaho’s Save Women’s Sports Act, 206 other female legislators from across the country, and 38 Family Policy Councils. Our brief asks the Court. to uphold laws, like Idaho’s and West Virginia’s, that seek to protect safety and fairness if girls’ sports. As leading advocates on this issue True North Legal continues to , provide legal and policy expertise to media and churches across the state.
